Kirby was a British artist of prodigious early talent gaining admission to the Liverpool City School of Art at the age of 15. He earned his nickname 'Josh' after Joshua Reynolds on account of his mastery of anatomy and portraiture. In much of his work he employed mystical scenes and he went on to become one of Britain’s foremost illustrators, most recognised for his illustrations of book covers for Sir Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series. Following his death a retrospective 'Out of this World – The Art of Josh Kirby' was held in 2007 at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool spanning his career from early freelance work to his famous cover illustrations
